Two Share the Lead Entering Final Round of the Virginias Women's Stroke Play Championship at Kingsmill Resort & Spa's Woods Course

SCORES AND CHAMPIONSHIP INFORMATION

WILLIAMSBURG
–– Defending champion Lauren Greenlief, 19, of Oakton and Christine Appleton, 23 of Seaford are at even-par 144 and share the lead entering Thursday’s final round of the 33rd Virginias Women’s Stroke Play Championship. The championship is being conducted by the Virginia State Golf Association at Kingsmill Resort & Spa’s Woods Course (5,798 yards from the championship tees and 5,148 yards from the secondary set of tees par 36-36—72).

On a day when no competitor shot a round of par or better, Appleton shot a day-two best round of 1-over 73, while Greenlief, the overnight leader, had a second round 74. Springfield’s Mimi Hoffman is six strokes back at 6-over 150 (74-76).

In gaining a share of the lead, Appleton (pictured left) played a seven-hole stretch from Nos. 9-15 in one under par, starting with a birdie at the par-5 ninth, where she knocked her third-shot approach to 20 inches. She added two more birdies at the par-4 11th, where she made a 4-footer, and then answered bogeys at Nos. 12 and 14 by draining a 30-footer at the par-4 15th hole.

Appleton will be in the final grouping on Thursday with co-leader Greenlief, and says her success in the final round will depend on whether or not she adheres to the time-honored golf adage of playing one shot at a time.

“I left some shots out there today and didn’t take advantage of some opportunities,” said Appleton, a 2009 graduate of UNC Wilmington and a quarterfinalist at the ’08 VSGA Women’s Amateur Championship. “All week, I’ve been trying to focus on my strengths at each hole and not get ahead of myself. I’m looking forward to [Thursday].”

Greenlief, a rising junior at the University of Virginia and a finalist at the ’09 VSGA Women’s Amateur Championship, was three over par after the first four holes following a double-bogey 6 at the par-4 fourth hole.

Greenlief said she “played solid, consistent golf the rest of the way” and rallied to play the remainder of her round in one under par. She converted birdies at No. 9 (8 feet) as well as the par-5 13th hole, where she made birdie from just off the putting surface to share the overnight lead.

“I’m really excited for [Thursday],” said Greenlief, a redshirt sophomore on the Cavaliers’ golf team. “I’m usually a pretty good closer, so I am just going to go out and strike the ball solidly.”

Among the competitors playing from a second set of tees (5,148 yards), Williamsburg’s Colleen Robertson answered her first-day 84 with a second round 75 and owns a two-stroke lead over Yorktown’s Ann Mennell and 10-year-old Naomi Mitchell of Norfolk.
