
MIDLOTHIAN, VA. –– The eight-player Carolinas team claimed final day singles matches by to post a six-point victory, 9-3, as the 9th Mid-Atlantic Girls’ Challenge concluded today at Independence Golf Club.
Owners of a four-point advantage after sweeping opening day four-ball encounters, the Carolinas team outscored Virginia-Maryland by two points (5-3) in singles play. A team of juniors mixing Virginia and Maryland players against their North and South Carolina counterparts competed in the event.
Reigning VSGA Junior Amateur and Junior Girls’ champion Amanda Steinhagen (Oak Hill, Va.) got Virginia-Maryland started on the right note, posting a 3 and 2 victory to open singles encounters. But Carolinas responded by taking three straight matches from Nos. 2-4 as Anne Marie Covar (Edgefield, S.C.), North Carolinas Junior Girls’ champion Katherine Perry (Cary, N.C.) and Lori Beth Adams (Burlington, N.C.) each posted victories. Perry posted a narrow 1-up victory over Chesapeake’s Lauren Coughlin in a tightly-contested match.
Virginia-Maryland registered two other victories as Clare Connolly (Chevy Chase, Md.) and two-time reigning Richmond Women’s Golf Association Amateur champion Lyberty Anderson (Chesterfield, Va.) recorded victories in encounters five and six, respectively.
Carolinas finished the matches off with two wins from team members McKenzie Talbert (North Augusta, S.C.) and Allison Emrey (Charlotte, N.C.).
The Carolinas team posted its sixth victory in the past seven meetings in the matches.
