SUFFOLK
–– Four competitors – Ridgeway’s Dylan Jensen, local golfer Bryce Cope of Virginia Beach, Richmond’s Adam Ball and Ashland’s Trey Culley – shot 3-under-par 69 to pace the first day of stroke play qualifying today as the 20th Virginia State Golf Association Junior Match Play Championship got underway at Nansemond River Golf Club (6,679 yards, par 36-36—72).

The 17-year-old Jensen, a semifinalist in the championship last year, and Cope, 16, recorded four birdies against a single bogey to open stroke play qualifying. Meanwhile, Ball (right), 16, the reigning VSGA Junior Amateur champion and co-medalist at last year’s Junior Match Play with his older brother, Matthew, opened with five birdies against two bogeys, shooting two under on the inward nine. Even par through the first five holes, Cully, a student at Hanover High School, played a five-hole stretch from Nos. 7-11 in three under par. After a birdie at the par-3 seventh, he turned in one under and added consecutive birdies at Nos. 10-11.

Cope’s teammate at Floyd E. Kellam High and fellow VSGA member at Heron Ridge Golf Club, Alex Lloyd (Virginia Beach), also posted red numbers with a first round 2-under 70; Lloyd continues to shine on the Nansemond River layout, having won the Suffolk Junior Open at the layout last November. Six other competitors, including ’09 event finalist Jack Adkins of Martinsville, opened with 1-under 71.

Following today’s first round of stroke play qualifying, the field was reduced to the low 75 scorers and ties, with 75 competitors at 9-over-par 81 or better advancing. After Wednesday’s second round of stroke play qualifying, the top 16 players will advance to the opening round of match play on Thursday, June 24. The quarterfinals will also take place on Thursday followed by the semifinals and scheduled 18-hole final on Friday, June 25.
