MIDLOTHIAN –– Virginia’s eight-player junior girls team will look to continue their winning ways against their Maryland counterparts at the 12th Virginia-Maryland Junior Girls’ Team Matches, set for Saturday-Sunday, July 10-11 at Turf Valley Resort in Ellicott City, Md.
Virginia’s team is headlined by 2009 VSGA Junior Girls’ champion Paige Reese, 18, of South Hill as well as Amanda Steinhagen, 18, of Oak Hill. With her victory at the 2009 Virginia High School League Girls’ Open Golf Championship, Steinhagen became the only girl to ever win the event on two occasions. Steinhagen is making her team-high fourth appearance on the Virginia team.
The field also includes 14-year-old Lyberty Anderson (pictured right) of Chesterfield. Anderson, a student at Bailey Bridge Middle School recently repeated as the Richmond Women’s Golf Association Amateur champion a year after becoming the youngest winner in the event’s 83-year history in 2009. Anderson, making a return appearance on the team, was also an alternate in U.S. Girls’ Junior qualifying.
Hannah Pierce, 17, of King George, the owner of two Battlefield District individual titles and a fourth-place finisher at last year’s VHSL Girls’ Open will also represent the Virginia squad; Pierce is making her third-straight appearance on the team. Hampton Roads golfer Lauren Coughlin, 17, of Chesapeake, the runner-up at the ’09 VSGA Junior Girls’ has also been named to the team.
Northern Virginians and 17-year-olds Alex Austin (Burke), Shabril Brewer (Herndon) and Sara Stanley (Herndon) complete the Virginia contingent; each player is making their first appearance on the team.
At last year’s matches, the eight-player Virginia junior girls’ team claimed six of eight final day singles matches and posted a six-point victory (9-3) at the matches at Turf Valley Resort in Ellicott City, Md.
At last year’s event at Lexington Golf and Country Club in Lexington, Va., the eight-player Virginia team posted three mid-match victories, but it wasn’t quite enough as Maryland’s junior girls’ claimed the matches by a 7-5 count.
With the matches tied 2-2 after first day four-ball matches, Maryland posted a 5-3 victory in last day singles action to take home the Poindexter Cup and post their first win in the history of the matches.
Prior to 2009, Virginia took home the Poindexter Cup with: a six-point victory in 2008 (9-3) in 2008 at Turf Valley Resort; a five point win (8½-3½) in 2007 at Fredericksburg Country Club. a four-point victory (8-4) at Towson Golf and Country Club in Phoenix, Md., in 2006; a five-point triumph (10½-5½) in 2005 at Hanover (Va.) Country Club; a three-point win (9½-6½) at Hunter Oaks Country Club in Grasonville, Md., in 2004; a 17-point win (26½-9½) at Clifton’s Twin Lakes Golf Course in 2003; triumphed in a one-point contest in 2002 (18½-17½ at Prospect Bay Country Club in Grasonville, Md.); they won by seven in the 2001 matches (21½-14½ at Mount Vernon Country Club in Alexandria) and registered their largest margin of victory of 19 points in 1999 (27½-8½ at Belle Haven Country Club in Alexandria). The only tie in the history of the matches came in 2000 when the two teams’ deadlocked 18-18 at Columbia Country Club in Chevy Chase, Md.
In the format, one point is available for each match and one-half point is awarded for a tie. VSGA Women’s Division board members Nancy Duncan (Alexandria) and Marilyn Bussey (Roanoke) will captain the Virginia team.
