FIRST ROUND SCORES AND CHAMPIONSHIP INFORMATION

2010 VSGA AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP FACT SHEET

June 29-July 3, 2010
at Belle Haven Country Club, Alexandria, Va.

VENUE: The VSGA Amateur Championship is making its first visit to Belle Haven Country Club. The golf course was originally designed by Leonard Macomber and opened in 1924. The layout underwent a complete renovation by designer Arthur Hills, ASGCA, in 2003.

Belle Haven welcomed the 2007 VSGA Mid-Amateur Championship and is set to host the 2011 VSGA Women’s Amateur Championship.

TOUGH TRACK: When Belle Haven originally opened, it was a classic layout “that wasn’t as hard as it is today,” according to the club’s head PGA professional Steve Danielson.

At the 2007 VSGA Mid-Amateur, no one broke 70 on the 6,952-yard, par-72 layout that played about 6,800 for the championship. Dan Hosek of Alexandria won with a 3-over par score of 219. His final round 71 tied for the second lowest score of the day. Hosek saved the 71 and the victory with an up-and-down par on the last hole.

Making the areas around the greens tougher were the focal point of Hills’ renovations.

“We have a lot of elevated greens, and if you short side yourself on any shot, getting up and down is difficult,” Danielson said. “It’s easy to make bogey, even on the shorter holes.”

Closely mown fairways make for tight lies. Danielson says players must play well on the first seven holes to be in position to deal with the longer, harder holes at Nos. 8-14. The last four holes are challenging as well. The layout’s par 5s are risk-reward, and only one of the par 3s plays less than 200 yards.

SEE VIRGINIA’S BEST AMATEUR PLAYERS:  Admission to the championship is open to the public, FREE of charge, and spectators are encouraged to attend.

GROUPINGS AND STARTING TIMES: Groupings and starting times will be available on the VSGA’s Web site at www.vsga.org. Starting times will begin at 8 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. on Tuesday, June 29 and Wednesday, June 30 off Nos. 1 and 10 tees.

THE WINNER RECEIVES: The champion of the 2010 VSGA Amateur Championship receives the Schwarzschild Brothers Trophy and is exempt for all future VSGA Amateur championships, provided he remains an amateur.

2009 RECAP: Brinson Paolini of Virginia Beach scored a 2-up comeback victory against then Virginia Common-wealth University senior Lanto Griffin (Blacksburg) at Cedar Point Country Club in Suffolk.

Paolini rallied to win seven of nine holes to close the match to become the ninth player ever to win consecutive titles in the event.

Paolini, who became the youngest player in seven decades to win the championship with his triumph last year at Kingsmill’s River Course, became the youngest to successfully defend his VSGA State Am title. The late and legendary Chandler Harper of Portsmouth won the first of his three VSGA State Amateur titles in 1930 at the age of 16 before capturing his second in 1933 at the age of 19.

HISTORY COURSE: Paolini recently finished a solid freshman year at Duke University, where he garnered Atlantic Coast Conference Freshman of the Year honors. He posted two top-five finishes, four top-10s and six top-20s as a Blue Devil freshman. This summer, he’ll be shooting for an unprecedented three titles in a row.

“I wouldn’t miss it,” Paolini says. “No one has won the VSGA Amateur three consecutive times. I’m working hard getting prepared for this year’s tournament. I want very much to win it.”

Paolini finished his first year at Duke with the lowest stroke average by a freshman in program history (72.3), and matched a Duke freshman record with six rounds in the 60s. Paolini helped the Blue Devils earn a spot in the NCAA Division I Men’s Golf Championship at The Honors Course in Chattanooga, Tenn. In addition, Fincastle’s Marshall Bailey competed in NCAA’s as an individual qualifier.

In June, Paolini tied for 14th place at the 57th Annual Sunnehanna Amateur at Sunnehanna Country Club in Johnstown, Pa.

ACC REUNION: In the spring, Paolini finished in a tie for fourth place individually at the Atlantic Coast Conference Men’s Golf Championship at The Old North State Club in New London, N.C. Duke closed play in a tie for third place as a team. Paolini’s longtime friend and fellow Princess Anne Country Club member Evan Beck of Virginia Beach closed with 1-under 70 to help Wake Forest to a share of third place with Duke. Beck, who is in the VSGA State Amateur field, posted the Demon Deacons low round on the last day and he tied for 21st place.

RECORD-SETTER RETURNS: Stanardsville’s Mikey Moyers set the VSGA State Amateur’s 36-hole stroke play qualifying scoring record of 12-under 132 last year at Cedar Point Country Club in Suffolk. Moyers’ to-par total also signaled an event-best mark for 36-hole qualifying.

Record seven-time VSGA State Am champion Vinny Giles posted a 133 (68-65) aggregate at par-70 James River Country Club in Newport News in 1993. McLean’s Peter Badawy previously posted a to-par total of nine under (135) at par-72 Lowes Island Club’s Island Course in 2007.

Moyers is attending Virginia Tech on a golf scholarship, where he led the team in stroke average (73.06) as a freshman during the 2009-10 campaign.

VSGA POINTS LEADERS IN THE FIELD: The VSGA State Amateur field includes five of the top six point-earners from the June 25, 2010 VSGA player rankings, including 50-year-old furniture sales representative Keith Decker of Martinsville, the top-ranked amateur in the commonwealth and the 1988 and 1991 VSGA State Amateur winner.

This year, Decker has amassed points by winning the Chatmoss invitational as well as the Kenridge Invitational and Allegheny Amateur.

CHANGING DYNAMIC: A look back at the past three VSGA State Ams shows 24 collegians and 16 juniors (18 years old and younger) were in the field for the 2006 championship at The Homestead. In 2007 at Lowes Island Club’s Island Course in northern Virginia, the numbers were 28 collegians and 20 juniors.

The 2008 renewal at Kingsmill Resort & Spa’s River Course in Williamsburg featured 21 players who were playing on their respective college golf team and 15 juniors. In 2009 at Cedar Point Country Club in Suffolk, there was a record 24 junior golfers and 21 players playing on their college golf team at the time.

Vinny Giles, the premier amateur in Virginia golf history and record seven-time VSGA State Am winner, was 19 and a college student at the University of Georgia when he won his first VSGA State Amateur in 1962. He captured his second in 1964 and added titles in 1966, 1968, 1969 and 1971. He was the U.S. Amateur Championship runner-up three years in a row (1967-69) when it was a stroke play event. He finally won the U.S. Amateur in 1972.

The winners in the years Giles didn’t were older, career-amateur players such as Nelson Broach, Wayne Jackson and Sam Wallace.

Lanny Wadkins (1970), Bobby Wadkins (1972 over teenager Curtis Strange) and Strange (1974-75) were college players when they triumphed. John Rollins was at Virginia Commonwealth University when he won back-to-back in 1996-97. Steve Marino was at the University of Virginia when he won in 1999 and Jay Woodson was at James Madison University when he picked up consecutive titles in 2002-03.

WELL-TESTED: College players don’t win every year. Vienna’s Pat Tallent, a career amateur, claimed his first VSGA State Amateur in 2007 when he was 53 by defeating Longwood University senior John Rosenstock. Tallent beat four players who were 25 years old or younger.

Last year’s final four consisted of Paolini, Griffin (then a rising senior at Virginia Commonwealth University), Garland Green (then a rising junior at Virginia Tech) and mid-amateur Ben Keefer of Glen Allen.

NORTHERN EXPOSURE: With the exception of Tom McKnight (Galax) at the Country Club of Fairfax in 1985, over the past 25 years the winners have been from the area when the championship visited northern Virginia. Springfield’s Scott Inman won in 1994 at Robert Trent Jones Golf Club; Lorton’s Ross McIntosh triumphed in 2001 at RTJ; and Vienna’s Pat Tallent took home the title in 2007 at Lowes Island Club’s Island Course (the club is now known as Trump National Golf Club, Washington, D.C.). Prior to Inman’s’94 triumph, the last northern Virginian to have won the VSGA State Amateur was Springfield’s Neff McClary in 1977 at Washington Golf and Country Club. Times have since changed. Northern Virginians have claimed six of the past 11 VSGA State Amateur titles dating back to 1999.

That could be a good omen for 2009 VSGA golfer of the year Scott Shingler of Haymarket. Shingler was the low amateur and runner-up in the SunTrust State Open of Virginia last summer. He qualified for match play in last year’s VSGA State Amateur but lost in the first round. He played the renovated Belle Haven layout a couple of years ago in the Middle Atlantic Golf Association Amateur Championship.

UPWARD BOUND: A VSGA State Amateur in northern Virginia is usually a once in a while deal. Belle Haven is the second club from the region to host a VSGA State Amateur in four years. Lowes Island in Potomac Falls was the site in 2007. Before that, Robert Trent Jones Golf Club in Gainesville was the venue in 2001 and 1994. Fairfax Country Club was the host in 1985, and Washington Golf and Country Club welcomed the championship in 1977.

“The VSGA and Belle Haven agreed on a package deal with the Mid-Amateur Championship in 2007 and the Amateur Championship [this year] several years ago,” said Matt Smiley, VSGA director of competitions. “The VSGA has been doing this more in recent years, as it helps secure quality sites for multiple events and helps the players and VSGA staff get a feel for the course prior to the Amateur Championship.”

DIRECTIONS: From I-495 South, take Route 1 South to Fort Belvoir. Merge onto Route 1 and move to the left hand lane. At the intersection of Huntington Avenue and Route 1, make a left onto Huntington Avenue. Continue to the intersection of Fort Hunt Road and Huntington Avenue. The entrance to the club is directly across the street.
