Final round action set for Thursday, June 3. FIRST ROUND SCORES AND CHAMPIONSHIP INFORMATION
WAYNESBORO –– Ridgeway's Fran Hensley and Shelley Savage of Alexandria each shot 2-over-par 75 and are tied for the lead entering Thursday's final round of the 13th Virginia State Golf Association Senior Women's Stroke Play Championship at Waynesboro Country Club (5,422 yards, par 37-36—73).
Hensley (pictured right) and Savage, both former champions in the event, are a stroke clear of Springfield’s Mimi Hoffman (76, +3) headed to the last day. Salem’s Dot Bolling and Portsmouth’s Cindy Morris opened with 5-over 78 and are three strokes off the pace.
Hensley, the VSGA Senior Women’s Stroke champion in 2001, shot two over on the outward half, but bolstered by a birdie at the par-5 11th hole to offset a late bogey, she posted even par on the inward nine to own a share of the lead.
Savage, the champion three of the past five years (2005, 2006 and 2008) played the solid round that has become her trademark, recording 16 pars against two bogeys; during one stretch from Nos. 3-13, Savage reeled off 11 consecutive pars. Savage and Bolling own a record three victories in the event.
Other flight leaders heading into the final round are: Roanoke’s Valeta Pittman in flight two (81), Broadway’s Marijo Wood in flight three (84) and Charlotte McComas of Oak Hill (99) in flight four.
