MIDLOTHIAN –– Groupings and starting times for the first round of  the SunTrust State Open of Virginia are now available. The championship is set for July 15-18 at Independence Golf Club, the VSGA Foundation’s statewide home for golf in Midlothian. Entries for this year’s championships closed at 5 p.m. on Monday, May 10. 

The SunTrust State Open of Virginia field consists of exempt players and zone qualifiers to determine the field of 168 golfers, comprised of 80 eligible professionals, 80 eligible amateurs, the defending champion, Faber Jamerson, and seven Open qualifiers. Altogether, 332 amateurs attempted to qualify for the SunTrust State Open of Virginia.

Ten (10) amateur golfers, including 2008 champion Dr. Roger W. Newsom (Virginia Beach) and Martinsville’s Keith Decker, a three-time winner in 1996, 2001 and 2002, were fully exempt from having to qualify for the 2010 SunTrust State Open of Virginia.

All previous SunTrust State Open of Virginia champions from the past 10 years were fully exempt in their respective events, but they had to file an entry. The remainder of Open field was filled from zone qualifying at 12 sites throughout Virginia, set for May 24, 26 and 27 as well as June 1, 2, 7 and 8.

For the SunTrust State Open of Virginia, a qualifier was be held for MAPGA golf professionals on Monday, June 21 at Hanover Country Club. In addition, there will be seven spots available for the special “Open qualifier” for amateurs and professionals on Monday, July 12 at Providence Golf Club in Richmond.

THE 10 AMATEUR GOLFERS WHO ARE EXEMPT FOR THE 2010 SUNTRUST STATE OPEN OF VIRGINIA

–– Buck Brittain (Tazewell) – No. 3-ranked golfer in the season-ending 2009 VSGA player rankings.

–– Keith Decker (Martinsville) – Top-ranked golfer in the season-ending 2009 VSGA player rankings. Top-ranked golfer in the season-ending 2009 VSGA player rankings.

–– Garland Green (Tazewell) – Semifinalist at the 2009 VSGA Amateur Championship. No. 4-ranked golfer in the season-ending 2009 VSGA player rankings.

–– Dan Hosek (Alexandria) – 2007 VSGA Mid-Amateur champion.

–– Ben Keefer (Glen Allen) – Semifinalist at the 2009 VSGA Amateur Championship.

–– Tim Kelley (Ashland) – Top-five amateur at the 2009 SunTrust State Open of Virginia (tied for fourth low amateur).

–– Dr. Roger W. Newsom (Virginia Beach) – 2008 SunTrust State Open of Virginia champion.

–– Scott Shingler (Haymarket) – Top-five amateur at the 2009 SunTrust State Open of Virginia (low amateur). No. 2-ranked golfer in the season-ending 2009 VSGA player rankings.

–– Daniel Walker (Earlysville) – Top-five amateur at the 2009 SunTrust State Open of Virginia (tied for fourth low amateur).

–– Adam Webb (Ridgeway) – Top-five amateur at the 2009 SunTrust State Open of Virginia (second low amateur).
