KESWICK
–– Oak Hill’s Amanda Steinhagen, 18, shot 2-under-par 70 to earn medalist honors in stroke play qualifying as the 85th Virginia State Golf Association Women’s Amateur Championship got underway today at Glenmore Country Club (5,808 yards, par 36-36—72).

Steinhagen, a graduate of Oakton High School who is headed to Longwood University on a golf scholarship in the fall, earned the top seed for the match play portion of the championship, which begins on Tuesday.

Each of the top-five seeds are age 20 or younger and four are teenagers. Three-time Roanoke Valley Hall of Fame champion Meredith Swanson, 19, of Roanoke, a rising sophomore at the University of South Carolina, and Katie Murphy, 20, of Chesapeake, a rising senior at the College of William & Mary, each had even-par 71 to occupy the second and third seeds, respectively. Northern Virginian Ju-Hee Bae, 15, of Fairfax and local competitor Elizabeth Brightwell, 19, of Nellysford, who recently completed her first year as a redshirt freshman at the University of Virginia, both posted even-par 72, complete the top five seeds.

A very respectable one over par headed to the last three holes, Steinhagen finished with a flurry on a sweltering day near Charlottesville, birdieing the final three holes to earn low qualifying honors. She drilled a 7-iron to 3 feet at the par-3 16th, drained a 35-footer for birdie following a 6-iron approach from tangly rough one hole later and closed her round by holing a 12-footer at the par-5 finishing hole.

Playing in her first competitive event since May, Steinhagen’s game showed little rust, hitting 15 greens in regulation and 11 of 14 fairways. The only golfer ever to win the Virginia High School League Girls’ Open Golf Championship on two occasions, Steinhagen continues to add to her accomplishments, earning the medal for the first time in her second start at the Women’s Am.

“I felt good about my round. I played more solidly than I thought I would,” says Steinhagen, who used the time off to recover and work on her game. “It’s a little bit of a confidence boost to play so well.”

Meanwhile, Murphy and Swanson equaled a day-one best with five birdies to post red numbers.

At the conclusion of stroke-play qualifying, six competitors at 7-over 79 vied for one place in the match-play field in the championship flight, with 13-year-old Elizabeth Bose of Norfolk, the youngest player in the field, making birdie on the second extra hole to earn the final spot. The championship flight includes two former VSGA Women’s Amateur winners in defending champion Whitney Neuhauser of Barboursville and 2005 champion Cindy Morris of Portsmouth. Neuhauser, who graduated from U.Va. in the spring, will face her former Cavalier teammate in Brightwell to start of match play on Wednesday. The match is a rematch of their semifinal round encounter from last year at Danville Golf Club that Neuhauser won, 2 and 1.

The first round of match play is scheduled for Wednesday, July 7, with the quarterfinals and semifinals on Thursday, July 8. The scheduled 18-hole championship final is set for Friday, July 9.
