KILMARNOCK –– Oak Hill’s Amanda Steinhagen, 18, carded a final round 74 to post a wire-to-wire win at the 41st Virginia State Golf Association Junior Girls’ Championship, which concluded today at Indian Creek Yacht & Country Club (5,588 yards, par 36-36—72 in the 12-18 age division and 2,411 yards, par 36 for the 11-and-under age division).
Steinhagen (pictured right) opened with 4-under-par 68 and owned a two-stroke lead entering final round play, finished the championship at 2-under-par 142 to claim her first VSGA Junior Girls’ title. Last week’s VSGA Women’s Amateur champion, the northern Virginian became the first golfer to hold the Women’s Am and Junior Girls’ title simultaneously in 30 years; Charlottesville’s Kandi Comer captured both championships in 1980.
Admittedly longing for a VSGA title, she’s won two in the past five days, starting with her Women’s Am triumph last Friday at Glenmore Country Club.
“I’m still trying to get over what’s happened. I really just can’t believe everything that’s happened over the past week,” Steinhagen said.
Playing in the last VSGA Junior Girls’ Championship for which she is eligible, Steinhagen was the only competitor to finish with a 36-hole aggregate under par and she took home the Ann Lewis Trophy. A spring graduate of Oakton High School, Steinhagen is headed to Longwood University in the fall on a golf scholarship.
Chesapeake’s Lauren Coughlin, 17, whom Steinhagen led by two strokes entering the final round, also closed with 74 (144, Even) as did fellow 17-year-old Shabril Brewer (Herndon), who finished three back at 1-over 145.
Central Virginian Lyberty Anderson, 14, of Chesterfield (75, +3) and recent VSGA Women’s Am semifinalist Ju-Hee Bae, 15, of Fairfax (74, +2) closed play at 2-over 146. Bae won the 14-15 age division with a birdie on the second extra hole. South Hill’s Paige Reese, the 2009 VSGA Junior Girls’ champion, shot a final-round best 1-under 71 and finished five off the pace at 3-over 147.
Some windy conditions affected shot selection and sent scores soaring throughout the day, especially in the morning. Steinhagen shot one over on the outward nine, but made a key birdie at the par-5 ninth, draining a 10 footer to steady herself and regain a measure of calm headed to the closing nine. After a bogey at 11, she parred the last seven holes to claim victory.
Steinhagen battled the putter at times in the initial stages, but the birdie to close her outward nine “really got me going,” she said. “Even though my putts didn’t always fall, it was a bit of a confidence booster to make a putt compared to earlier in my round.”
Playing in the same grouping as Steinhagen, Coughlin was tied for the lead after 11 holes, but a double-bogey at the par-5 14th derailed her chances. Likewise, Brewer was within a stroke after 10, but was three over par in a four-hole stretch from Nos. 13-15.
Twelve-year-old Shannon Brooks of Vienna had a final round 3-over 75 (157, +13) to record a four-stroke win in the 12-13 age division.
Meanwhile, 8-year-old Victoria V. Tip-Aucha of Manassas Park (89, +17) was victorious in the 11-and-under age bracket, who played nine holes each day.
