DAVIDSON, N.C. –– The 24-golfer Virginias team won four matches and halved two others, but it wasn’t quite enough as Carolinas won four-ball encounters by 10 points, 23-13 during the second day of the 54th Virginias-Carolinas Women’s Team Matches at River Run Country Club.
The two teams halved first-day matches at 18-18, but Carolinas now owns a 41-31 advantage entering Wednesday’s final-day four-ball matches.
In the format, three points are available per match; a point is scored for winning the outward half, the inward nine and the overall match.
For Virginias, reigning VSGA Women’s Amateur and Junior Girls’ champion and Amanda Steinhagen (Oak Hill) continued her excellent play, teaming with Kristine Rohrbaugh (Midlothian) to post a win and two-and-a-half points. Northern Virginia seniors Arline Hoffman and Linda DiVall of Alexandria also registered a victory and two-and-a-half points. Central Virginians Boodie McGurn (Richmond) and Joanne Kitsuky (Glen Allen) added two points.
For Carolinas, Kim Brielle (New Bern, N.C.) and Laura Wearn (Charlotte, N.C.) registered a three-point shutout. Meanwhile, the combinations of Lea Anne Brown (Mount Pleasant, S.C.)-Vanessa Koechli (Greer, S.C.) and Greenville, N.C., residents Maggie Weder and Angela Stewart notched two-and-a-half points. Meanwhile, Kathy Binkley (Cornelius, N.C.)-Cynthia Curry (Charlotte, N.C.) recorded a victory and two points.
Virginias will need a comeback to post its seventh win in the past eight meetings between the two teams dating back to 2003. |
