Rick Schuller Leads at Halfway Point of the SunTrust State Open of Virginia at Independence Golf Club

CLICK HERE FOR THIRD ROUND SCORES AND STARTING TIMES

MIDLOTHIAN
–– Dry conditions have been prominent in Virginia this summer, but threatening weather was a big part of the story in the second round of SunTrust State Open of Virginia at Independence Golf Club (7,029 yards, par 36-36—72).

A more than three-hour weather delay on Friday didn’t affect PGA professional Rick Schuller (Chester), who used an eagle-birdie finish to shoot a championship-best 8-under 64 to own a one-stroke lead heading to the weekend.

Schuller, the 1998 event champion, is at 13-under 131 through 36 holes. Collegian Evan Beck, 19, of Virginia Beach had a second round 5-under 67 (132, -12). Professionals Stephen Gangluff of Charlottesville (second straight round of 67) and Blackstone’s Cameron Yancey (68) are at 10-under 134 and three strokes off the pace. Virginia Tech junior Marshall Bailey (Fincastle) had a day two 68 and is four back at 9-under 135.

The suspension of play started at 3:25 p.m. due to the threat of lightning in the area, before resuming again at 6:44 p.m. Competitors played until dark. Second-round play was completed on the morning of Saturday, July 17. The third round will begin around 11 a.m. off of Nos. 1 and 10, with the lead groups set to start at around 12:30 off hole No. 1.

Altogether, 77 competitors (47 amateurs and 30 professionals) at 4-over-par 148 or better made the 36-hole cut. The cut number was the lowest it has been since 2005 at Willow Oaks when competitors with a 148 aggregate made the weekend.

Schuller (pictured right), who opened with 67, was bogey-free with five birdies prior to the delay. The unwelcome weather arrived while the grouping was standing on the 14th tee.

“We’ll go out and see what happens, whenever we do go out,” Schuller said during the weather-induced break.

He liked the results when play resumed. After two-putting from 50 feet following a mis-hit at 14, he drove it in play and set up scoring opportunities the rest of the way. Schuller completed a long day in memorable fashion draining a 25-footer for eagle at the par-5 17th and stuffed his approach close at the par-4 finishing hole before draining the 4-footer. Schuller, 47, has his best chance to win in recent years since finishing third in 2007.

“I really like how I’m thinking. I like the way I’m putting,” said Schuller, the teaching professional at Swader’s Sports Park in Colonial Heights. “That feeling doesn’t come much and it makes your targets look bigger because you have the putter backing it up – currently.”

Beck, who was four under par before the delay hit, struck pinpoint irons shots at the flagstick all day. He shot three under on his outward nine (Nos. 10-18) and the longest of his four birdies was 12 feet; he sandwiched in another birdie from 4 feet at the par-4 second prior to play being suspended and added another at the par-5 eighth after play resumed.

“I’m hitting it really well. I’m looking forward to doing some of that on [Saturday], keep it going and see what happens,” said Beck, who finished second at last week’s Eastern Amateur. “There are 36 holes left. I’m in position to potentially make something happen. An eagle-birdie finish is pretty good, though.”

Both Gangluff and Yancey made three birdies after the competitors got back out. The assistant professional at Charlottesville’s Farmington Country Club, Gangluff, 34, battled the putter before the dark clouds rolled in and welcomed the chance to regroup. Playing his first competitive event since February, he birdied three of the last four holes once play got started again, starting with a 25-footer at No 15 before making birdie putts of 4 feet or less on Nos. 17 and 18.

“I needed that break. I was struggling with the putter. I went back out, something clicked and I made some putts. I needed to call a timeout – you don’t get that in golf,” Gangluff said. “I was getting a little steamy under the collar with the putter. It helped me to stop because my rhythm was headed the other way.”

Yancey came back from the delay to birdie three of the first four holes to turn around what was a pedestrian day scoring-wise to that point. A mini-tour player, Yancey, 31, knows the putter will be the difference-maker on the weekend.

“I hate to be behind guys of that caliber,” Yancey said. “I’m going to have to shoot seven or eight under, but if something goes in, I’m right there.”

The suspension interrupted a three-hole stretch of birdies from Nos. 10-12 by the 21-year-old Bailey.

“It’s kind of a surprise. I wish it wouldn’t have hit,” he said.
