ELLICOTT CITY, MD. –– The eight-player Virginia junior girls’ team claimed six of eight final day singles matches and posted a five-point victory (8½-3½) as the 12th Virginia-Maryland Junior Girls’ Team Matches concluded today at Turf Valley Resort.
Owners of a one-point lead after first day four-ball matches, Virginia outscored their counterparts 6-2 in final day singles play. Virginia, which now owns a 10-1-1 all-time lead, recaptured the Poindexter Cup and avenged its only loss in the series last year.
Virginia won five of the first six matches and posted four consecutive victories in matches 3-6 to claim the matches. Chesapeake’s Lauren Coughlin, 17, got things started by scoring a 5 and 4 victory over Diana Brown in the opening match. After Maryland’s Maia Schechter (Takoma Park, Md.) posted a 1 up win in match two versus Shabril Brewer (Herndon, Va.), Virginia responded to take the next four matches.
In match three, Hannah Pierce, 17, of King George collected four birdies and registered a 3 and 2 triumph over Elizabeth Silbernagal (Fallston, Md.), while 14-year-old central Virginian Lyberty Anderson (Chesterfield) continued her strong play, getting past Bryana Nguyen (Columbia, Md.), 1 up. Making their debut appearance on the Virginia squad, 17-year-old northern Virginians Alex Austin (Burke) and Sara Stanley (Centreville) completed the decisive run by recording victories in matches five and six, respectively. Austin defeated Kushboo Thiagaraj (Rockville, Md.), 3 and 2, while Stanley bested Caroline Quamme (Potomac, Md.), 2 and 1
The two states’ reigning Junior Girls’ champions traded wins in the closing two encounters. Recent Maryland Junior Girls’ winner Karishma Thiagaraj (Rockville, Md.) was a 1-up victor over Amanda Steinhagen (Oak Hill) in match seven, while ’09 VSGA Junior Girls’ champion Paige Reese, 18, of South Hill posted a 3 and 2 triumph over Clare Connolly (Chevy Chase, Md.). Reese will defend her Junior Girls’ title this week at the championship, set for Indian Creek Yacht & Country Club in Kilmarnock on Tuesday-Wednesday July 13-14.
On the Virginia side, Coughlin, Anderson and Reese paced the team, helping to supply all the available two points over the weekend.
This year’s Virginia team was captained by VSGA Women's Division board members Nancy Duncan of Alexandria, Va., and Marilyn Bussey of Roanoke, Va., president of the VSGA Women’s Division.
