In the 70-and-over division, Roanoke’s Ned Baber takes Bob Moyers of New Market.

At age 65, both Lea and Casstevens are making their debut appearance in the championship. Lea the champion of the 65-69 age division at the VSGA Senior Stroke Play Championship in mid-June, continued his strong play, scoring a 6 and 5 quarterfinal round victory over David King (Potomac Falls), before besting medalist and top seed George Owens (Richmond), 3 and 2 in the afternoon session. Lea won the final three holes of the match, Nos. 14-16, and played that stretch in two under par to close out Owens.

Meanwhile, Casstevens scored a 3 and 2 quarterfinal round victory over William King (Crozier). Then, in the semis, he got past fellow Richmonder Tom Hackett (Powhatan), 1 up to advance. Casstevens held a 4-up lead after nine holes before his opponent answered back to square the match at the par-4 17th hole. Casstevens won the final hole, the par-4 18th, to take the match.

Among the 70-and-overs, Baber, 73, ousted the division’s medalist Harry Cain (Williamsburg) in the quarters, 2 and 1. Baber, the winner of the 70-and-over division in 2007 at the VSGA Grand Masters Championship, won three of the final four holes of the match to record a 3 and 1 victory over James Burton (Aldie) in the afternoon session.

The 74-year-old Moyers, meanwhile, a six-time VSGA Senior Four-Ball champion, bested second-seeded James Naylor of Lexington, 3 and 2 in the morning session. He then claimed the final five holes of the match to defeat third-seeded Murray Rudisill (Portsmouth), 6 and 4 in the semifinals.

The Lea versus Casstevens 65-69 championship match begins at 7:30 a.m. on Friday, followed by the Baber versus Moyers encounter at 7:40 a.m.
