Virginia got off to a strong start by winning two of the first three matches. In match one, 17-year-olds Shabril Brewer (Herndon) and Lauren Coughlin (Chesapeake) notched a 4 and 3 victory over the tandem of Elizabeth Silbernagal (Fallston, Md.) and Caroline Quamme (Potomac, Md.). Virginia’s other victory came in the third match as two-time reigning Richmond Golf Association Women’s Amateur champion Lyberty Anderson, 14, of  Chesterfield (pictured right) teamed with ’09 VSGA Junior Girls champion Paige Reese, 18, of South Hill to get past Bryana Nguyen (Columbia, Md.) and recent Maryland Junior Girls’ winner Karishma Thiagaraj (Rockville, Md.), 1 up.

In the second encounter of the day, Hannah Pierce (King George, Va.) and Sara Stanley (Centreville, Va.) halved the Maryland tandem of Maia Schechter (Takoma Park, Md.) and Kushboo Thiagaraj (Rockville, Md.). The host Maryland squad scored a win and a resulting full point in match four, with Diana Brown (Potomac, Md.) and Clare Connolly (Chevy Chase, Md.) combining to defeat northern Virginians Alex Austin (Burke, Va.) and Amanda Steinhagen (Oak Hill, Va.), 3 and 1

Virginia, which owns an 9-1-1 lead in the all-time series, will look to continue their winning ways and recapture the Poindexter Cup when the event concludes with eight singles matches on Sunday, July 11. This year’s Virginia team is captained by VSGA Women's Division board members Nancy Duncan of Alexandria, Va., and Marilyn Bussey of Roanoke, Va., president of the VSGA Women’s Division.
