DAVIDSON, N.C. –– The 24-golfer Carolinas team outscored their Virginias counterparts in four-ball encounters by 18 points, 27-9, on the final day to claim the 54th Virginias-Carolinas Women’s Team Matches at River Run Country Club.
Carolinas, the owner of a 10-point advantage entering the final day, posted a 28-point victory (68-40). In the format, three points are available per match; a point is scored for winning the outward half, the inward nine and the overall match.
For Virginias, teenagers Amanda Steinhagen, 18, of Oak Hill and 17-year-old Hannah Pierce (King George) teamed for a two-and-a-half points on the final day, while team co-captain Lindsay Wortham (Richmond) and Arline Hoffman (Alexandria) posted a halve. Northern Virginian Sherry Bowman (Manassas) and Larie Lynch (Huntington, W.Va.) also scored one-and-a-half points.
Entering this year's meeting, Virginias has won six of seven meetings between the two teams dating back to 2003. |
