Four Share Medalist Honors at the VSGA Senior Women's Amateur at The Homestead's Old Course

Match play portion of the championship begins on Tuesday.

HOT SPRINGS –– Four competitors shot even-par 72 to share medalist honors in stroke play qualifying today at the 53rd Virginia State Golf Association Senior Women’s Amateur Championship at The Homestead’s Old Course (5,014 yards, par 36-36—72).

The group at even par is comprised of record five-time winner Peggy Woodard of Virginia Beach (pictured right) as well as multiple-time champion Boodie McGurn (Richmond), and northern Virginian Mimi Hoffman (Springfield). Additionally, local Sara Cole of Salem had 72.

Hoffman, the 2006 victor, earned the top seed for match play, while McGurn, the defending champion and the 2003 winner, and Cole are seeded second and third, respectively. Woodard, the victor from 1996-98 and again in 2000 and 2002, and Portsmouth’s Cindy Morris, who carded 1-over 73, complete the top five seeds.

Altogether, eight former VSGA Senior Women’s Amateur winners are in the championship flight. In addition to Hoffman, McGurn and Woodard, five other former event champions qualified for the 32-player championship flight: Alexandria residents Linda DiVall (2003 and 2007) and Shelley Savage (2005) as well as Salem’s Dot Bolling (2001), Fran Hensley of Ridgeway (1999) and Glen Allen’s Joan Darden (1989). Hensley won this year’s VSGA Senior Women’s Stroke Play Championship, while Bolling collected her 16th Roanoke Valley Women's Golf Association City-County Tournament title last week.

Match play for 32 golfers in the championship flight starts on Tuesday, July 27 at The Homestead’s Old Course. The balance of the field was positioned into six additional flights by qualifying score and will also begin the match play portion of the event on Tuesday.

In the championship flight, the second round of match play is set for Wednesday, July 28, followed by the quarterfinals and semifinals on Thursday, July 29, before the scheduled 18-hole championship final on Friday, July 30.
