The low amateur receives the Fritz Souder Trophy and the low professional earns the Lyn Luck Trophy. The purse for this year’s championship will be in the $60,000-$65,000 range.

THE 2009 CHAMPION: Faber Jamerson of Appomattox shot a final round 2-under-par 70 to cruise to a five-stroke victory at last year’s SunTrust State Open of Virginia at Independence Golf Club (7,127 yards, par 36-36—72).

Jamerson, the head PGA professional at Falling River Country Club in Appomattox, finished the championship at 19-under-par 269 (65-66-68-70) and picked up his third triumph in the event. Mid-amateur Scott Shingler of Haymarket (69) earned low amateur honors and tied for second place along with PGA professional Chip Sullivan of Troutville (68) at 14-under 274.

GOOD COMPANY: Jamerson’s five-stroke victory margin was the largest in the event’s history since 2006 when he triumphed by six strokes at Willow Oaks Country Club, joining Chandler Harper (10-time State Open champion as a professional) as the only golfers in the event’s history to win as both an amateur and as a professional. Jamerson also won in 1999 as a 22-year-old amateur, blowing past the field by eight strokes at Ford’s Colony Country Club.

With his first Open victory at Independence, Jamerson became the second player to win the championship three times since the two Opens merged 25 years ago. Amateur Keith Decker (Martinsville), who won in 1996, 2001 and 2002, was the last player to pull off the trio of victories.

NEAR VICTORIES: With his tie for second-place finish last year, Sullivan, the PGA director of golf at Hanging Rock Golf Club in Salem, finished as the runner-up for a fourth time in the past five years, having also finished second in 2005, 2006 and 2008.

Sullivan also was low professional in 2004, when central Virginia amateur Spence Andrews triumphed. Andrews, who is now a professional, was the last amateur to win the event prior to Roger Newsom’s (Virginia Beach) victory in 2008.

RIDING HIGH: Sullivan qualified for the 92nd PGA Championship at Whistling Straits in Kohler, Wis. The championship is set for Aug. 12-15, 2010. He earned the spot by tying for sixth place in the 2010 PGA Professional National Championship at French Lick Resort in French Lick, Ind., where the top 20 finishers advance to the PGA Championship.

Sullivan, the 2007 PGA Professional National champion, posted rounds of 69-73-71-73 to finish at even-par 286. His third round was highlighted by a hole-in-one at the par-3 13th hole of the Pete Dye Course. The ace won him a new Precedent golf car from Club Car.

REIGNING PGA PROFESSIONAL PLAYER OF THE YEAR IN FIELD: Rick Schuller of Chester, Va., the 1998 SunTrust State Open of Virginia champion, earned PGA professional player of the year accolades for 2009.

The final standings were determined based on a point system involving both national and PGA Section competitions from Jan. 1 through Dec. 18, 2009. Schuller, who turned 47 on Dec. 18, the day he was declared the national award winner, is the PGA teaching professional at Swaders Sports Park in Prince George, Va. He becomes the first Middle Atlantic PGA Professional to win the national PGA Professional Player of the Year honor.

Schuller captured both the TaylorMade-adidas Golf PGA Stroke Play and Match Play championships. He also earned his fourth Middle Atlantic PGA Section Championship, his fourth Section Player of the Year Award and pocketed the Section PGA Professional Championship. Additionally, Schuller was the leading money winner in the PGA Tournament Series.

TOUGH TRACK: Of the 74 competitors (40 amateurs and 34 professionals) who made the cut last year, 13 amateurs completed the event under par, while 10 professionals finished in red numbers.

VSGA POINTS LEADERS IN THE FIELD: The SunTrust State Open of Virginia field includes four of the top five point-earners from the June 26, 2010 VSGA player rankings, including 50-year-old furniture sales representative Keith Decker of Martinsville, a three-time State Open champion.

Other top point-earners in the field are the following competitors:

·    Glen Allen’s Ben Keefer (No. 2; 2010 VSGA Four-Ball champion)

·    Ashland’s Tim Kelley (No. 3; 2010 VSGA Four-Ball champion)

·    Haymarket’s Scott Shingler (No. 5, the 2009 VSGA golfer of the year and low amateur at last year’s SunTrust State Open of Virginia advanced past U.S. Open local qualifying earlier this year.)

Additionally, five of the eight players who advanced to this year’s VSGA State Amateur quarterfinals or further are in the field: Garland Green, 22, of Tazewell (semifinals); Allen Barber, 51, of Yorktown (quarterfinals); Seth Norman, 22 of Norfolk (quarterfinals); Jeremy Wells, 19, of Hopewell (quarterfinals); and Paul Woodson, 20, of Powhatan (quarterfinals).

NUMBERS GAME: One of the keys to contending on Sunday is managing a grueling early stretch of the first seven holes. Independence starts with three demanding par 4s measuring more than 430 yards. Competiitors are then faced with a risk-reward par 5 at No. 4, before encountering a tough 4-4-3 stretch at No. 5-7.

Competitors get some relief during a mid-round stretch that includes a birdieable par 5 (No. 8), two short par 4s (Nos. 10 and 12) and a modest-length par 3 (No. 11), the only one of four that plays less than 200 yards.

“If you can get through the first seven holes around par, you have some opportunities from Nos. 8-13,” says Mike West, the PGA director of golf at Independence Golf Club. “You can get your round going. From Nos. 10-13, you have to play that stretch under par to have a good round. You can’t rely on birdies early or birdies late.”

SELECT COMPANY:
With a fourth title, Martinsville’s Keith Decker, the event’s champion in 1996, 2001 and 2002, Woody Fitzhugh, PGA (1984, 1986, 1988) and Faber Jamerson, PGA (1996, 2006, 2009) all have a chance to become the first player to accomplish the feat since Danville’s John Bruce captured four VPGA Opens from 1974-77.

HISTORY LESSON:
The State Open dates back to 1924 and this will be the 110th playing and 83rd year of the championship. This year marks the 26th anniversary of the “merged” Opens – prior to the merge in 1985, two State Open championships were held per year from 1958-85 by the two governing organizations, the VSGA and MAPGA.

The late Chandler Harper, PGA, claimed the championship a record nine times (1932, 1938, 1940, 1941, 1952, 1960, 1967, 1968 and 1970), including posting wins in five different decades. In 1970, he won the title at age 56, becoming the oldest player to ever win the State Open.

Other notable past champions include six-time winner Bobby Cruickshank, PGA, (1933, 1934, 1935, 1936, 1937 and 1939) as well as five-time victors Jack Isaacs, PGA, (1949, 1950, 1956, 1958, 1961) and Tom Strange, PGA, (1957, 1963, 1964, 1966 and 1967), among others. Also among those players to capture the championship were three-time winners Keith Decker of Martinsville (1996, 2001 and 2002) and Richmond’s Vinny Giles (1969, 1973 and 1974), who remain amateurs, as well as PGA professionals Faber Jamerson (1999, 2006 and 2009) and Woody Fitzhugh (1984, 1986 and 1988). Other past champions went on to play the PGA Tour such as Lanny Wadkins (1971), Bobby Wadkins (1981, 1982, 1983), Mark Carnevale (1984) and Robert Wrenn (1983, 1989 and 1991).

In winning the 1991 title by a championship record-tying 12 strokes at  Willow Oaks Country Club, Wrenn shot a tournament record 20-under-par 268, which included a third round 9-under-par 63. Woody Fitzhugh, PGA, also won the championship by 12 strokes over Vinny Giles in 1986.

CHAMPIONS IN THE FIELD: Past State Open champions in this year’s field include the following nine competitors (a – denotes amateur):

- Jon Corliss, PGA, Virginia Beach (2003)

- Craig Gunn, PGA, Danville (1992)

- a – Keith Decker, Martinsville (1996, 2001, 2002)

- a – Tony DeLuca, Purcellville (before the merger of the two State Opens, he won the VPGA Open as an amateur in 1979 and the VSGA Open as an amateur in 1981)

- Woody Fitzhugh, Great Falls (1984 VPGA Open champion, 1986 and 1988)

- Faber Jamerson, PGA, Appomattox (1999, 2006 and 2009)

- a – Roger Newsom, Virginia Beach (2008)

- Rick Schuller, PGA, Chester (1998)

- Tim White, PGA, Midlothian (1987)

PLAYOFF TIME: The last playoff victory was by amateur Roger Newsom (Virginia Beach) in 2008 (defeating Chip Sullivan, PGA).  Previously, Jon Corliss, PGA (2003), amateur Keith Decker (2002) and Rob McNamara, PGA (1995) all recorded playoff victories since the merger of the two State Opens.
