KESWICK

–– Teenagers and twenty-somethings highlight Thursday’s quarterfinal field as match play got underway today at the 85th Virginia State Golf Association Women’s Amateur Championship at Glenmore Country Club (5,808 yards, par 36-36—72).

Altogether, each of the top seven seeds posted wins on day one of match play. In Thursday morning’s semifinals, medalist and top seed Amanda Steinhagen, 18, of Oak Hill takes on the most veteran player remaining in the championship flight in Cindy Morris, 51, of Portsmouth. Both Steinhagen, an Oakton High graduate who is bound for Longwood University in the fall. and Morris opened match play with 4 and 3 victories.

Also in the top half of the bracket, 15-year-old Ju-Hee Bae of Fairfax made birdie on the first extra hole, the par-5 first, to outlast Cyndi Carlson (Chesapeake) in 19 holes. Making her first appearance in the championship, the northern Virginian will meet local Elizabeth Brightwell (Nellysford), a rising sophomore at the University of Virginia, in Thursday’s quarters. The 19-year-old Brightwell, who just completed her first year as a redshirt freshman at U.Va., wiped out her former Cavalier teammate and defending Women’s Am champion Whitney Neuhauser (Barboursville), 7 and 6.

Three collegians occupy the four spots in the bottom portion of the bracket. Second-seeded Meredith Swanson, 19, of Roanoke, a rising sophomore at the University of South Carolina, takes on mid-amateur Amanda Diamond, 26, of Leesburg. Both players won the final two holes of their first round encounters to notch 3 and 2 wins.

In the other quarterfinal round match, Chesapeake’s Katie Murphy, 20, a rising senior at the College of William & Mary, meets two-time reigning Virginias Women’s Stroke Play champion Lauren Greenlief (Oakton), 19, a rising junior at the University of Virginia.
