WILLIAMSBURG –– Central Virginian John Casstevens (Glen Allen) shot even-par 71 to lead the first round of stroke play qualifying at the 16th Virginia State Golf Association Super Senior Amateur Championship at the Golden Horseshoe Golf Club’s Gold Course (6,102 yards for ages 65-69 and 5,707 yards for ages 70-and-over, par 36-35—71).
Casstevens, 65, was two over par through 10 holes, but played an inward half stretch from Nos. 11-15 in three under to post the low round of the day. Meanwhile, Lexington’s James Naylor, 72, shot 4-under 67 to lead the 70-and-over age group after the first round of qualifying. Naylor birdied three of the last four holes, Nos. 15, 16 an 18, to better his age by five strokes.
Also among the 65-69 age division, northern Virginian and former VSGA Senior Amateur champion David King of Potomac Falls, 68, opened stroke play qualifying with 2-over 73. Williamsburg’s Harry Cain equaled his age and had 1-over 72 among the 70-and-over division.
Following Wednesday’s second round of stroke play qualifying, eight players will qualify for the 65-69 match play field and eight players will qualify for the 70-and-over match play field. Match play qualifiers will play two rounds of matches on Thursday, July 8 and final round matches on Friday, July 9.
