Virginias Team Set for the 54th Virginias-Carolinas Women's Team Matches

MIDLOTHIAN –– The Virginias team will be aiming for their seventh victory in the last eight meetings against their Carolinas counterparts as the 24-golfer squad was announced today for the 54th Virginias-Carolinas Women’s Team Matches, set for July 19-21 at River Run Country Club in Davidson, N.C.

The 12-player regular contingent is headlined by recent VSGA Women’s Amateur champion Amanda Steinhagen of Oak Hill. Steinhagen, 18, is also the only player to win the Virginia Girls’ Open Golf Championship on two occasions.

The team also includes a rising contingent of players, including ’09 VSGA Women’s Amateur champion Whitney Neuhauser (Barboursville) and Paige Reese (South Hill), last year’s VSGA Junior Girls’ champion. Collegians and former Richmond Women’s Golf Association Amateur champion Kristine Rohrbaugh (Midlothian) and Samantha DiDomenico (Follansbee, W.Va.) as well as prep standout Hannah Pierce (King George), the owner of two Battlefield District individual titles, help complement the team. In addition, Longwood University teammates Alexa Boucher (Orange) and Kameron Carter of Bassett (pictured left) were selected to the team as was recent college graduate Larie Lynch (Huntington, W.Va.).

Mid-amateurs Cyndi Carlson and Kerry Johnson of Chesapeake as well as Joanne Kitusky (Glen Allen) complete the regulars’ team.

On the nine-player seniors side, two-time VSGA Senior Women’s Amateur winners Linda DiVall of Alexandria (pictured left) and Boodie McGurn (Richmond) were selected as were past Senior Women’s Am champions Mimi Hoffman (Springfield) and Shelley Savage (Alexandria). McGurn and Hoffman are both former VSGA Women’s Am winners as well and are joined on the team by ’05 State Women’s Am winner Cindy Morris (Portsmouth). Savage, meanwhile, is a three-time VSGA Senior Women’s Stroke Play winner and is joined on the squad by another Senior Stroke victor in Sherry Bowman (Manassas). Central Virginian Lindsay Wortham (Richmond), twice a winner of the Richmond Women’s Golf Association Amateur Championship, as well as Sara Cole (Salem) and Arline Hoffman (Alexandria) complete Virginias senior team representation.

Reigning VSGA Senior Stroke Play champion Fran Hensley (Ridgeway), Peggy Woodard of Virginia Beach, a record five-time VSGA Senior Women’s Am winner, and Caroline Ramsey (Bridgeport, W.Va.) are a part of Virginias super senior contingent.

At last year’s event, the 24-golfer Virginias team outscored their Carolinas counterparts by nine points (22½-13½) in final day four-ball matches to post a wire-to-wire 25-point win (66½-41½) at the event, conducted at Raven Golf Club at Snowshoe Mountain, W.Va.

Possessors of a 16-point advantage entering final-day action, Virginias recorded seven wins, including five shutouts and halved another match. Virginias took home its sixth win in the past seven meetings between the two teams dating back to 2003.

The event annually rotates between sites in the Virginias and Carolinas. The Virginias last win on North Carolina soil came in 1982 when the squad scored a 12-point win at Pinehurst’s No. 2 Course.

The event is making its first visit to River Run Country Club, a collaborative design between World Golf Hall of Fame member Raymond Floyd and golf course designer Robert C. Walker. The layout opened in 2008.

Championship action consists of captain’s choice play (Monday, July 19) and four-ball competition (Tuesday and Wednesday, July 20-21). In the format, a point is scored for winning the outward half, the inward nine and the overall match.
