DAVIDSON, N.C. –– The 24-golfer Virginias team used a late surge to tie their Carolinas counterparts 18-18 following opening day four-ball action at the 54th Virginias-Carolinas Women’s Team Matches at River Run Country Club.
In the format, three points are available per match; a point is scored for winning the outward half, the inward nine and the overall match.
Virginias answered an early deficit to win 11 of 12 points in the final four matches. Rising young players Paige Reese (South Hill) teamed with Kristine Rohrbaugh (Midlothian) to post three points, while 20-somethings Kameron Carter (Bassett) and Whitney Neuhauser (Barboursville) also posted shutouts. Reigning VSGA Women’s Amateur and Junior Girls’ champion Amanda Steinhagen (Oak Hill) teamed with mid-amateur Cyndi Carlson (Chesapeake) to post a blanking, while seniors Arline Hoffman (Alexandria) and central Virginian Lindsay Wortham (Richmond) combined for a 3-0 victory.
Also contributing wins and two-and-a-half points for Virginias were northern Virginian Shelley Savage (Alexandria) and Joanne Kitsuky (Glen Allen) as well as Cindy Morris (Portsmouth) and 17-year-old Hannah Pierce (King George). The Carolinas team won senior matches by two points, 5½-3½.
Virginias is seeking its seventh win in the past eight meetings between the two teams dating back to 2003. Remaining championship action consists of four-ball competition on Tuesday and Wednesday, July 20-21. |
