Altogether, the first round of match play was upset-free with 14 of the top 15 low qualifiers from stroke play posting victories. Hoffman, the 2006 winner, was a 7 and 5 victor in her first round match against Christian Hale (Narrows), while fellow medalists Boodie McGurn of Richmond (7 and 6 triumph against Roanoke’s Wanda Flora), Peggy Woodard of Virginia Beach (5 and 4 win versus Nancy Duncan of Alexandria) and local Sara Cole of Salem (3 and 2 victory over Susan Krancer of Williamsburg) each moved on to the second round.

Hoffman will face Richmond’s Gail Schenck in the second round of match play. The same top half of the bracket features a matchup of former champions as ’01 winner Dot Bolling (Salem) meets ’05 champion Shelley Savage of Alexandria. Woodard, meanwhile, will take on Maggie Balch of Maidens. Portsmouth’s Cindy Morris, the ’05 VSGA Women’s Amateur champion, faces northern Virginian Shawn McCullough (Alexandria) in the other encounter in the top half of the bracket.

The bottom half of the bracket is highlighted by two matchups of former event winners. McGurn, the defending champion and winner in 2003, meets a fellow central Virginian in Senior Women’s Am veteran Joan Darden (Glen Allen) in round two. Multiple-time victor Linda DiVall of Alexandria takes on ’99 champion Fran Hensley of Ridgeway  

Cole, meanwhile, takes on Richmond’s Lindsay Wortham, twice a winner of the Richmond Women’s Golf Association Amateur Championship in round two, while Alexandria’s Arline Hoffman meets Becky Bondurant (Buchanan).

The second round of match play and the start of consolation matches is on Wednesday, July 28. Quarterfinal and semifinal round matches are scheduled for Thursday, July 29 before the scheduled 18-hole final and awards presentation on Friday, July 30.
