Suffolk's J.P. Leigh Earns Medalist Honors at the 57th VSGA Senior Amateur

Match play gets underway on Wednesday.

HOT SPRINGS –– J.P. Leigh, 56, of Suffolk shot a second round 4-over-par 74 at The Homestead’s Cascades Course to earn medalist honors and the top seed heading into match play at the 57th Virginia State Golf Association Senior Amateur Championship as stroke play qualifying concluded today at the resort’s Cascades Course (6,256 yards, par 35-35—70,) and The Old Course (6,227 yards, par 36-36—72).

Following his first round best 4-under 68 at The Old Course, Leigh (pictured left) concluded stroke play qualifying at even-par 142 to take home his first medal in the championship. Leigh, who led VSGA points leaders in the association’s senior division player rankings heading into the event, continues to enjoy a solid season, having  claimed his second straight VSGA Senior Stroke Play Championship earlier this spring.

Noting that “experience brought me through” in stroke play over the past two days of qualifying, Leigh, who turns 57 on the same day match play starts on Wednesday, Sept. 1, will face 1996 winner Stan Fischer of Richmond to open match play at The Cascades.

Oakton’s Walt Martin turned in a second round 2-over 71 (143, +1) to earn the second seed. Meanwhile, 2003 runner-up Jamie Gough of Fairfax answered his opening day 73 at The Old Course with a 71 on day two at The Cascades to gain the third seed. Roanoke’s Jack Tuttle made the move of the day. After shooting 77 on day one, he came back with even-par 70 in the second round at The Cascades to notch the fourth seed. Richmond’s Tony Aguiar (147, +7), the 2002 medalist, owns the fifth seed entering the match play portion of the championship.

At the conclusion of 36-hole stroke play qualifying, 32 players at 12-over-par 154 and better advanced to match play.

In the super senior division (ages 70 and older), Copper Hill’s Reginald Clark, Roanoke’s Buford Lumsden and Richmond’s Mel Roach finished stroke play qualifying with 10-over-par 152 aggregates. Clark has the top seed and Lumsden is seeded No. 2, while Roach withdrew from the championship due to injury.

The first and second rounds of match play in the senior division will take place on Wednesday, Sept. 1, followed by the quarterfinals and semifinals on Thursday, Sept. 2, and the 18-hole final, scheduled for Friday, Sept. 3.  Meanwhile, the super senior quarterfinals will be held on Wednesday, Sept. 1, before the semifinals on Thursday, Sept. 2, and the 18-hole final on Friday, Sept. 3.  Matches will take place at The Cascades Course.
