Eight Golfers Remain At 57th VSGA Senior Amateur Championship

Quarterfinal and semifinal action set for Thursday at The Homestead's Cascades Course.

HOT SPRINGS –– The top two stroke play qualifiers and veteran Jim Kite, 73, of Wolftown are among eight golfers who advanced to quarterfinal action as the first and second rounds of match play concluded today at the 57th Virginia State Golf Association Senior Amateur Championship at The Homestead’s Cascades Course (6,256 yards, par 35-35—70).

Stroke play medalist J.P. Leigh (Suffolk) survived a close morning contest with 1996 champion Stan Fischer of Richmond, but prevailed 1 up. Fischer misfired on some makeable attempts that would have ended the match during the late stages, but Leigh managed to come away with the triumph. Spurred by three straight birdies on the inward half (Nos. 11-13) in his afternoon match, Leigh, the top-ranked senior amateur in the VSGA player rankings, scored a 5 and 4 victory over Richmond’s Ray Taylor. After getting past Fischer in the morning, being among the remaining eight players in the field was as much relief as exhilaration for the 2003 and 2004 VSGA Senior Stroke Play champion.

“The first two days I was solid,” said Leigh, who will face Richmond’s Tom Vogt in the quarters. Vogt notched a 2 up win versus Staunton’s William May in second round play. “I had been playing well and it really was a shock the way I lost my confidence against Stan. It was probably the luckiest win I’ve ever had. Ever. I felt like I then got my confidence back in the afternoon.”

The oldest remaining player in the field, Kite’s steady play helped him to a 20-hole victory in the first round. He went on to build a 4-up advantage on Billy McClanan of Virginia Beach after nine holes in afternoon session, before prevailing 4 and 2. A six-time winner of the VSGA Senior Four-Ball, a three-time State Senior Stroke Play champion and former USGA Senior Amateur Championship runner-up, the left-handed Kite (pictured right) couldn’t help but laugh when asked about his expectations in the championship the rest of the way.

“When they slide, I just happen to sneak in the back door. When they see you playing left-handed, they’re thinking, ‘This is going to be easy.’ I hope these guys are good to me. If they can do something kind and good for me [Thursday], I’d appreciate it,” laughed Kite, who has owned and operated his own business, Kite Hams, for the past 45 years.

In the lower bracket, second-seeded Oakton’s Walt Martin delivered a 1 up morning win, before besting Williamsburg’s Harry Cain, 4 and 3 in afternoon play. A recent change from a long putter to a regular length blade has admittedly helped the Northern Virginian to his first appearance in match play in three previous appearances.

“I have been pointing toward this event all summer,” said Martin. He takes on George B. Owens of Virginia Beach in the next round. “As anyone who has played golf with me knows, I have made some changes in my putting. I have really been hitting the ball well the past three days, but who knows how long it is going to last?”

In the other quarterfinal match, Chesapeake’s Richard Ogden meets Richmond’s John Cuomo (pictured right). Making his first appearance in the event, Ogden drained a 50-foot birdie putt in the first round of match play to get past New Market’s Bob Moyers, 1 up. He then secured victory in a 22-hole marathon versus Williamsburg’s David McDougal, who knocked out third-seeded Jamie Gough of Fairfax in the first round, to earn an appearance in the quarters. Admittedly unfamiliar with the shots required at The Cascades and The Old Course coming in to the event, Ogden has quickly become acclimated with the layouts, having played at least 18 holes each day since arriving for an early practice round on Saturday. Meanwhile, Cuomo registered a pair of 2 and 1 victories to advance.

Among the super seniors (ages 70-and-older), defending champion Bill Chase of Glade Hill will meet Catawba’s J.D. Sisson in the quarters, while Roanoke residents Buford Lumsden and Bill Shrader will square off in the other match.

The senior division quarterfinals and semifinals will take place on Thursday, Sept. 2, followed by the 18-hole final on Friday, Sept. 3. Meanwhile, the super seniors will play the semifinals on Thursday and an 18-hole final on Friday. All matches will take place at The Cascades.
