J.P. Leigh Headlines First Day Of Stroke Play Qualifying at the 57th VSGA Senior Amateur Championship

Final round of stroke play qualifying set to take place on Tuesday.

HOT SPRINGS –– Suffolk’s J.P Leigh, 56, posted a first round-best 4-under-par 68 to pace the first round of stroke play qualifying at the 57th Virginia State Golf Association Senior Amateur Championship being held at The Homestead’s Cascades Course (6,256 yards, par 35-35—70) and The Old Course (6,227 yards, par 36-36—72).

Playing The Old Course, Leigh (pictured right), the 2003 and 2004 VSGA Senior Stroke Play champion, was one of four golfers to turn in a sub-par round. Leigh, who advanced to the second round of match play at last year’s event before falling to eventual champion Vinny Giles, 2 and 1, entered this year’s championship pacing all senior division point earners in the VSGA player rankings.

Also bettering par on day one were White Post’s Eddie Cassidy (70, -2), Alexandria’s Bill Engel (71, -1) and Oakton’s Walt Martin (71, -1). Glen Allen’s John Casstevens and Reston’s Bob Murphy each opened with even-par 72, while a trio of golfers, including 2003 VSGA Senior Am runner-up Jamie Gough carded first round 73s. Altogether, the low 21 scores of the day at 1-over 73 came at The Old Course; those same golfers will play the formidable Cascades Course during Tuesday’s second round of stroke play qualifying.

In the super senior division (ages 70 and older), Stafford’s Bill Irwin and Richmond’s Mel Roach each shot first round 5-over-par 77s at The Cascades to headline the opening round of stroke play qualifying in the division.

Following the second round of stroke play qualifying on Tuesday, Aug. 31 the senior field will be reduced 32 golfers who will compete in match play at the Cascades, beginning on Wednesday, Sept. 1. Meanwhile, the super senior field will be reduced to eight golfers, with the division’s quarterfinals set for Wednesday.

HOT SPRINGS –– Results following the first round of stroke play qualifying at the 57th VSGA Senior Amateur Championship for the senior division at The Homestead’s Cascades Course (6,256 yards, par 35-35—70,) and The Old Course (6,227 yards, par 36-36—72) on Monday, Aug. 30 (c=Cascades Course; oc=The Old Course).
