Virginia Golf Foundation Scholarship Applications Due Date Getting Near

Annual awards are given to Virginia high school students who are going on to attend a college or university within the commonwealth.

High school and aspiring Virginia college students, the Virginia Golf Foundation is again going to be awarding merit and need-based scholarships as well as turfgrass study awards.  The scholarships are awarded annually to Virginia high school students who have an interest in golf and wish to attend a college or university within the commonwealth.

Applications for 2006 may be obtained by clicking on the link below, or by contacting Peggy Reilly at the VSGA office at (804) 378-2300, ext. 11. The deadline for applications is Feb. 28, 2006. NO APPLICATIONS WILL BE ACCEPTED BEYOND THIS DATE.

The Virginia Golf Foundation Scholarship program, administered by the VSGA, funds scholarships, primarily through its VIP program, to worthy Virginia high school students who are interested in golf and wish to attend Virginia colleges and universities.  The awards are conditional on students’ good progress in academics. Criteria for the awards are an active interest in golf (ability not considered), academic achievement, citizenship, character and financial need.

Since being launched in 1985 with three awards for $4,000, the program has now given out more than $1.2 million ($1,235,100) in its 21 years. With this year’s 28 scholarships, the total number of recipients has reached 509 students.

The 2006 grants include the sixth C. Dan Keffer Award to a worthy student in honor of C. Dan Keffer, the former VSGA Scholarship committee chairman and Virginia Golf Foundation president.  In addition, the VSGA Women’s Division Spencer-Wilkinson Award will be given for a 12th time this year. The fund, formed by Debbie Spencer and Mary Wilkinson, affords young women with a special interest in golf to pursue college and career development. Along with the David A. King Merit Award, the VSGA Women’s Division
merit award will be given as well as the Red Speigle Award, given to a student from the Peninsula area.
