James Conkling Named VSGA Executive Director

New leader starts with the association on Monday, Feb. 13.

MIDLOTHIAN –– James G. Conkling has been named executive director of the Virginia State Golf Association, the association has announced.

Conkling will be responsible for leading the VSGA’s professional staff as well as working with the association’s board, volunteers and membership, which includes more than 315 member clubs and serves over 80,000 golfers in the commonwealth. He will join the staff on Feb. 13.

“The VSGA is one of the most active and well-respected golf associations in the country and I am looking forward to being a part of the staff,” Conkling said. “The VSGA leadership has been at the forefront of setting and achieving ambitious goals to further golf, and I am excited about helping to continue that progress.”

Currently a tournament official on the PGA TOUR, Conkling (pictured left) is involved in all aspects of the tour’s championship administration, including site selection, advance work, course set-up, determining playing conditions, working with volunteers and handling Rules situations. He began working on what is now called the Nationwide Tour in 1999, before moving to the PGA TOUR in 2003.

Conkling began his professional career working for the Wall Street firm of First Boston Corp., (now named Credit Suisse First Boston), before entering golf administration on the staff of the Metropolitan Golf Association in 1991. Conkling was named assistant director of rules and competitions for the Southern California Golf Association in December 1991, before being promoted to the association’s director of rules and competitions in 1993, where he oversaw the association’s championship administration.

A native of Larchmont, N.Y., Conkling, a Mamaroneck High School graduate, caddied at Winged Foot Golf Club for more than 15 years while growing up near the Long Island Sound. Conkling later graduated from Iona College in New Rochelle, N.Y.

He married his wife, Lillibeth, in 2004.

The VSGA has grown from four founding clubs since its inception to more than 315 today. In addition, the VSGA’s membership numbers more than 80,000.  The VSGA promotes and preserves the best interests of the game as embodied in its honorable traditions through its championships, handicap program, course rating system, rules education, communications, VIP and scholarship program as well as many other services.
