Results From The First Round Of Stroke Play Qualifying at the 2003 VSGA Women's Amateur Championship

CRAIG MASON AND THOMAS LEFEBVRE PACE STROKE PLAY QUALIFYING AT THE VSGA AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP
FOLLOWING THE FIRST ROUND

MANAKIN-SABOT -- Youth has again come to the forefront thus far this year as the first round of stroke play qualifying concluded today at the 90th Virginia State Golf Association Amateur Championship, where Kinloch Golf Club (par 36-36—72, 6,975 yards) bore its rather sizeable teeth during opening round action.

Craig Mason, 21 of Lorton, Va., Thomas Lefebvre, 20, of Quantico, Va., and Joe McCall, 42, of Richlands, Va., posted the day’s low score carding 2-under-par 70.  A contingent of five competitors, Martinsville’s Keith Decker, 43, Staunton’s Chad Fultz, 17, Richmond’s Allan Strange, 48, Arlington’s Chris McCartin, 17, and Alexandria’s Brian Marfori, 22, each turned in rounds of 1-under-par 71.  Ryan Stinnett, 21, of Amherst, a rising senior at Virginia Tech and runner-up at last year’s VSGA Amateur Championship, 18-year-old Brett Chambers (Mount Sidney), the reigning VSGA Junior Amateur champion, Richmond’s Will Oldham, 17, and Centreville’s Tim Vigotsky, Jr., 49, each shot even-par 72

During a humid day one, the Kinloch layout, complete with thick rough and slick greens that were pacing as much as 13.5 on the Stimpmeter, did not yield a round in the 60s, 12 competitors fired scores of par or better and 59 competitors registered a score of 80 or higher.

“It’s playing tough,” noted Decker.  “The greens are faster than anyone in this field is used to playing.”

In equaling the low round of the championship, Mason accounted for five birdies and three bogeys.  A semifinalist at the 2002 VSGA Amateur Championship at Bayville Golf Club in Virginia Beach, Mason put together a solid ball-striking day and was as much as four under on the inward nine.  Despite a pair of bogeys on Nos. 16 and 17, he shot even-par 36 on his final nine holes.  A rising senior at George Mason University in Fairfax, Mason took a conservative and cautious fairways-and-greens approach during first round play.

“I played consistently today and kept it out of that rough,” explained Mason.  “I put it all together at the right time.  If you hit in the rough, unless you catch a real good lie, you’re laying up.”

Lefebvre’s appearance in the VSGA Amateur Championship marks a reunion, of sorts.  Hisfather is a colonel in the United States Marine Corps and his family moved from Camp Lejeune, N.C., to Quantico, Va., in January 2003.  Lefebvre, the 2000 VSGA Junior Amateur champion, has made the most of his return visit.  After earning a spot in the State Am in zone qualifying, he accounted for six birdies and four bogeys today. Lefebvre, who is going through four-year Marine Corps ROTC training as a rising junior at Duke University, made a distinguishing mark during his first round at the State Am, managing to complete his day without a three-putt.

“I rolled it really well today,” pointed out Lefebvre, who is also playing on the Blue Devil golf team and says he plans to follow his father into military service upon graduation.  “The greens are fast, but if you read them right, they are easy to putt because they roll so true.”

Lefebvre says he is not surprised that this year’s championship is taking on youthful theme, similar to last year’s State Am when six of the eight quarterfinalists were age 21 or under.  “The nice thing about being young is we get to play all the time,” said Lefebvre.

McCall’s round was stoked by jarring a 4-iron for a hole-in-one on the demanding par-3 seventh hole, which was playing 210 yards.  In addition to his ace, McCall, who earned a spot in the State Amateur in zone qualifying, recorded five birdies to offset a double and three bogeys.

Decker, the 1988 and 1991 champion, was three under at one point on the closing nine holes, but had back-to-back three-putt bogeys on Nos. 16 and 17.  Like many of the competitors, following his round Decker headed straight for the practice green rather than the practice range.  Given his host of par saves on the outward nine, has Decker gained a beat on Kinloch’s subtle, but fast putting surfaces?

“No,” answered Decker, making a beeline for the practice green.  “That’s why I’ve got this putter in my hand.”

Following the second round of stroke play qualifying, which will be held on Wednesday, June 25, the field will be reduced to the low 32 competitors for the first round of match play, set for Thursday, June 26.
