Vardaman (pictured right), 69, registered a 1-up victory over Earlysville’s Donald Robertson to claim the 65-69 age division, while Cain posted a 5 and 4 triumph over Roanoke’s Bill Shrader to win the 70-and-over division.

A VSGA member at The Homestead’s courses, Vardaman was 1 down after 16 holes to his opponent, but at the par-5 17th hole, he drilled a 3-wood from 235 yards to 2 feet for a conceded eagle to square the match. At the par-3 18th hole, he two-putted for par to win the hole and complete the comeback.

Cain, 71, a former VSGA Senior Stroke Play champion and the winner of last year’s VSGA Grand Masters Championship (ages 70-and-over), built a 6-up advantage after nine holes to oust Shrader, a two-time VSGA Super Senior Amateur champion.
