In the top half of the bracket, Richmond’s Stan Fischer, the championship’s No. 1 seed, got past fellow central Virginian Steve Isaacs – the same player he teamed with to win the 2004 VSGA Senior Four-Ball title – by a 1-up margin in Wednesday’s second round of match play. Fischer made a birdie-2 on the par-3 17th hole to take a 1-up lead that he held at the last.

Fischer, the 1996 VSGA Senior Amateur champion, will face another familiar opponent in quarterfinal round action in longtime friend and fellow Kinloch Golf Club member Vinny Giles of Richmond. Giles, a two-time VSGA Senior Amateur winner (2000, 2003), posted a wire-to-wire 5 and 4 win over defending VSGA Senior Am champion Charles E. Green III of Tazewell in the second round of match play.

Williamsburg residents Jeff Fleishman and Mike McDonald meet in the other quarterfinal round encounter in the top half of the bracket. McDonald upended 2007 VSGA State Am champion and fifth-seeded Pat Tallent (Vienna), 2 up, in the second round of match play. McDonald was the stroke play equivalent of four under in the match. Meanwhile, Fleishman defeated northern Virginian George Kapetanakis (McLean), 2 and 1.

Of the four competitors who shared medalist honors at 2-over 142, three recorded wins on the first day of match play. In addition to Fischer, co-medalists Greg Thomas (Virginia Beach) and Centreville’s John Long posted victories.

In the lower half of the bracket, Thomas meets reigning VSGA Senior Stroke Play champion Bobby Bleiler (Suffolk) in Thursday’s quarters, while Long will take on local George B. Owens (pictured right) of Virginia Beach. Owens won the last three holes of his second round match to register a 3 and 2 victory over Jay Rickles (Hampton).

The championship’s quarterfinals and semifinals are set for Thursday, Aug. 27, prior to the scheduled 18-hole championship final on Friday, Aug. 28.
