VSGA BEGINS 2003 MEN’S CHAMPIONSHIP CAMPAIGN AT THE 32nd VSGA SECTIONAL TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP IN WILLIAMSBURG
WILLIAMSBURG -- The Virginia State Golf Association’s 2003 men’s championship schedule begins this weekend at the 32nd VSGA Sectional Team Championship, set for Williamsburg’s Kingsmill Resort’s Woods Course (Saturday, March 22) and the Golden Horseshoe Golf Club’s Green Course (Sunday, March 23).
A total of 14 eight-player teams, comprised of a regular (six players) and senior (two players) will combine and compete in the four-ball stroke play event. The championship is assuming a new name for the first this year after formerly being known as the VSGA Regional Team Matches. In the four-ball stroke play format, each player plays his ball into the hole, but only the best score is counted toward each team’s total.
In championship history, the Northeast section won consecutive titles in 2001 and 2002. The Northeast contingent had four players post rounds in the 60’s and shot 25-under 263 to claim last year’s rain-shortened championship. Defending the title for the Northeast team are seniors Jamie Gough (Fairfax) and Bill Stout (Arlington) as well as regulars Chris Coyer (Fairfax), Dan Derisio (Springfield), 2001 State Am runner-up Kevin Dillard (Fairfax), Mike Howell (Centreville), Jason Pool (Fairfax) and Tim Vigotsky (Centreville). Once referred to as simply the Northern Section, the team has collected a record 17 titles, while Richmond section squads have won on nine occasions.
Richmond-area teams have fared well in the championship during recent years, capturing four ofthe past six events dating back to 1997. Richmond South claimed the 1997 title, while Richmond North notched three consecutive victories (1998-2000). Richmond North has again assembled a strong team this year, which includes reigning Valentine Invitational champion David Partridge and 2002 Richmond Golf Association Amateur champion Glenn Mullian.
Initiated in 1972, this year’s field is deep in 2003 and includes 2002 VSGA Golfer of the Year Keith Decker (Danville/Martinsville). Also represented in the field are reigning VSGA Mid-Amateur champion David Passerell (Charlottesville/Valley), 2002 VSGA Junior Boy of the Year Ryan Sypniewski (Southwest) as well as past VSGA Amateur and Mid-Amateur champion Allen Barber (Peninsula).
In addition to Gough and Stout, who teamed to set the 36-hole scoring record (128, -16) at last year’s VSGA Senior Four-Ball Championship, the senior field is highlighted by 2002 VSGA Senior Amateur champion and senior golfer of the year David King (Northwest).
